    Tobacco Dip FAQ

    Delay's Official Guide to Dippin

Dipping, like many things, gets easier with experience. Everything That I teach you here will become more instinctual the more you dip.

I would first like to say dipping is not for people who can't take pain, are lightweights to tobacco, or have weak stomachs. Dipping tobacco has a strong taste, a strong buzz, and a strong burn.

First lets start with what tobacco to start out with. For those of you who have never dipped before, it's best to start with some brands like grizzly, skoal or husky, the taste from those isn't as strong as in other dip. For more experienced dippers I suggest brands like Redman, Copenhagen, and Timberwolf.

    Start Small:
A beginners pinch should be the size of about a quarter. You can put this on either side of the bottom lip near the canine teeth in your mouth.
When you build a tolerance to it, you may need to start packing bigger pinches, like the horse shoe pinch which goes around the entire front of the bottom jaw. Also if you're a beginner you may want to start with a pouch they keep all the tobacco together on their own. If this is your first time, or you just started dipping avoid swallowing at all costs. This will most likely make you sick. If you start to sweat or feel dizzy don't hesitate to take the dip out, these are tell tale signs that say you're about to throw up.

    Cuts:
There are three main cuts of dip. Long cut, medium cut, and small cut. The small cut is the more traditional snuff, but is harder to use.
Long cuts are best for beginners because their long strands make them easy to pack, and there's less pieces of tobacco to escape your lip. Personally I find the smaller the cut the less you need to use. So if you aren't new to dip don't be afraid of fine cut.

    Pack Your Tobacco:
Packing your tobacco helps you get a good pinch, it compresses the tobacco into a smaller area so you don't have to go back more than once or twice for a good pinch depending on your tolerance.
There are a few ways to pack dip in a can.
The easiest way is to hold it by the top and bottom and to smack it against your other hand a few times as hard as you can.
Another way is to put your thumb and middle finger around the side of the can and keep a loose index finger on the top of the can, and to shake that away from your body. This should make a smacking noise as you get better at it.
The final way, that I know of, is to put your thumb on the top of the can, and middle finger on the bottom indentation, and a loose index finger on the side and to pack that toward your body. This should also make a smacking noise after some practice.

Keeping The Dip In Your Lip:
A lot of people don't know how to keep the dip from coming out from in between their lip and gum. This is where not being a wussy like I said in the first place comes into play. The first strategy is to pack it down with your tongue. At first this may burn, but that's what dip does, get used to it or start smoking. Don't pack it down too tightly that you can't swish your spit through the wad of tobacco though. Another key thing to do is to press your lip tightly against your gum while you dip. These can help keep the dip in place and out of the back of your mouth into your throat.

    How To Properly Dip:
Build up your spit. Keep the spit in your mouth for a while, occasionally swishing through the wad of tobacco. When you spit out your spit don't let it all out at once, make a bunch of small spit curls every so often.
Keep the dip in your mouth until it loses its' flavor and burn. When I personally take dip out I press my lip against my gum so hard it presses all the liquid out and I slide the glob of leaf on outta my mouth. If you can't do this you can just as easily push it out with your tongue. After getting the dip out, it's best to rinse your mouth out with water to get all the leaf and dip spit out of there. Don't worry if you swallow a little bit of dip or the juice, it will happen in small amounts every time.

How To Keep Your Throat Hydrated:
The biggest problem that new dippers get is that they get a dry throat which can cause gagging. There are two ways to get around this. You can either just spit out your dip when you get thirsty so that you can drink, or you can drink while dipping. Drinking while dipping is more of an acquired skill. It will take some tolerance and skill to be able to do this without throwing up. First you want to spit all the dip juice out of your mouth, get it as dry as possible. As always spit will be building up in your mouth which will probably touch the dip and make you nauseous if you swallow it. The best thing to do is to cover the bottom of your mouth with your tongue, separating the path the liquid will travel down from the dip. You probably will swallow some dip and spit along with your drink but after a little while your stomach becomes more tolerant to it and this stops bothering it.

    Spitters:
Obviously if you don't want to be disgusting you're going to spit in something instead of anywhere around you. I wanted to take the time to say it's best to spit in something clear, like a water bottle, rather than not clear like a soda can. The reason being you do not want to mistake your spitter for a drink. This is one of the reasons I stopped dipping myself.

    Disclaimer:
Dipping is much more dangerous than most other methods of ingesting tobacco. Risk of getting cancer in the mouth are very high with this and problems with the stomach.

Beginner's might want to start with pouch dip, right? (Just a suggestion.) I think it's a lot easier to handle them at first rather the larger cuts.

Yeah I was thinking about adding that but I've never used a pouch so I have no clue if they put too much in there for beginners or not.

Also, consider recommending some brands for beginnings. You don't want new comers using Grizzly or some shit like that.

I did, but I always thought grizzly could be better for people starting out. The taste isn't super strong like in a few other brands.

Or sorry I did not see that paragraph. I just know Grizzly buzzed me much more than lets say skoal back when I dipped. It had me sick but that may just be me.

Haha he did and Grizzly ain't shit compared to the ones he listed like Cope and Redman. I dipped very sporadically but I'd take a pinch of whatever my roommate had at the time as he was a chronic dipper. When he made the jump from skoal/grizzly to Cope and Redman it was crazy. The taste and intensity of the high was certainly different.

Also delay you might wanna mention the different cuts with dip as beginner users should probably avoid fine cuts. It's a way more intense high and keeping everything together is definitely harder. At least in my experience.

Also I'm still a beginner dipper when it comes to tolerance and I can testify that the skoal pouches are great delay so throw them in there. They're especially great for the novice dipper if they're drunk too, it simplifies things immensely. And its a good amount, one pouch gives me that perfect "high" feeling I get from dipping without it being overwhelming.

Other than that well done man. Dipping sounds easy but unless you know what youre doing the chances of barfing are very high...

Consider, if you will, the morning boner. What a metaphor of hope and renewal! How can anyone give way to despair when one's groin meets each new day with such a gala spectacle of physiological optimism?

Yeah, I'd have to say pouches are really good for beginners. I don't smoke (never did) and I started dipping with pouches, it is the perfect amount for beginners in my opinion.

True that. Also, when putting a dip in keep it away from your tongue! That is what always caused me to gag and a lot of times that in turn caused me to sallow some and then throwing up.

You missed the most obvious point of a first time dipper. I don't know what dip you are doing but if you swallow a little bit of copenhangen straight than you're going to throw up.

Since this is a harm-reduction site, you might want to mention some of the consequences as well.

I had to have a good-sized portion of my tongue removed after just under three years of use.

It doesn't happen that way for most people, but for a mild head-rush, bad teeth, and nasty breath...plus all those half-full spitters nobody ever seems to throw out...is it worth your time and money to try?

Just about every time you dip you're going to swallow a very small amount of it, slowly you're stomach is going to become more tolerant to it. But yeah I'm going to add a section telling first timers to avoid this at all cost because it will most likely cause them to spew and feel like hell.

Yeah I agree with Gentle as well. Although delay is right too. My roommate in college dipped so much he was able to swallow with it in just so he could dip in class or in other such places where it may be considered uncouth to be hockin brown loogs every 10 seconds. This is also a testament to how addicting dip is. He couldn't go a 40 minute class without a lip in.

He quit quick as shit though once he started to get the leukoplakia on his tongue. It only took about 2 years of regular use to develop it as well.

    Spoiler for Yummy!:

Question about disclaimer: Is dipping really worse than smoking? I personally think its not as less all term users die from it. I was just wondering how you think that.

Fewer people dip than smoke. I don't know the statistics off hand, but they both have the potential to be pretty terrible for you. While dipping may very well be worse for you, I've heard a lot of people say it's worse just because they wanted to stress that it isn't necessarily a healthy alternative to smoking while they really didn't have any idea which was worse. I'm not saying that's the case here but it's something people do a lot.
    Spoiler for the difference:

I was thinking its easier to cut a piece of your jaw out rather then having your lung cut up into pieces. I mean of course neither is good in any way for you but every drug is that way. I just always thought dipping was not as bad as smoking when it comes to the health part of it.

The mouth and tongue cancers metastasize rather quickly I believe. And dipping is worse in all senses of the word. It's more addicting, and the negative side effects (not just cancer, all effects listed in delay's FAQ) generally have a quicker onset in most cases compared to smoking tobacco.

I started dipping at the beginning of this school year. Never been interested in it, but a lot of my school friends play baseball and they all dip so I kinda picked up the habit too. I've done most of the popular brands and a few of the not-so-popular brands as well. I've had Grizzly, Skoal, Copenhagen, Kodiak, Seneca, and Stokers as well as a few different types of chew and snus. I'd have to say Skoal Rich is my favorite with Stokers taking a close second. But I have a question about Timberwolf. Is it supposed to be dry? It's not too common around here but my friend found a tin at some random smoke shop. We never even packed it though because the tobacco was like cork in a tin. I don't know if it is supposed to be like that or if it was just a very very old tin. If it is supposed to be dry like that, how the fuck do you pack it?

It's just old, not as many people dip as there are people who smoke so when you buy a smaller name brand there's a better chance it's been sitting around for a while.
@Dragonfly try cope wintergreen it's probably the best wintergreen dip I've ever had.
