Hahaha yeah man it is highly, highly addicting. I'm almost afraid to start again... Do you do extract, partial mash, or full mash??
Consider, if you will, the morning boner. What a metaphor of hope and renewal! How can anyone give way to despair when one's groin meets each new day with such a gala spectacle of physiological optimism?

Props to anyone running full mash. I've only done one full mash batch and it was such a pain in the ass.

My best batches were full mash I've won two second places with A Bavarian Hefeweizen a Mocha Porter & third for 6 dry hopped Extra Dry Pale Ale When I was a member of a Brewclub in Davenport. Havent been in a club for 10 yrs.

Yeah man, having the yeast ready, it still takes up almost a whole Saturday sure is fun though
When I grew I dried 3 oz at 100 degrees for 2 days & added 2 oz. of Cascades & dry hopped a batch of Sweet Amber I saved most of em' for when I felt under the weather. Oh yeah, I made a batch w/ toasted smoked Plabano & Serrano peppers...my favorite so far
    Cheers

If you guys ever get the chance, try "Old Speckled Hen". It's a pale ale that comes in 6 packs, and they're bottles not cans. It's actually imported from England (The UK), and it tastes so damn good. Definitely one of my favorite beers, but it's a tad expensive so I save buying it for special occasions usually.

If you like that try & find Bombardier (English) same brewery as the Original Youngs Chocolate Stout

16th Anniversary Wood Aged Double IPA

    Great Divide Brewing Co.

Rich amber/red coloration, hoppy in flavor, earthy smell and aftertaste. A nice 10% ABV comes in a 20oz. bottle. minimal head if poured properly. A good beer for hop heads and for anyone who wants to get into the hophead phenomena. Much better the Arrogant Bastard which takes it up a few notches.

Halfway through my first glass and I am detecting a bit of oak, just read on the bottle its pale ale that's aged with oak chips in the wooden barrels. Interesting.

Lately I haven't been digging the pale ale like I used to back when I was 21-23 Its been malty abbey ales and stouts, and the golden ales. I've gotten a bunch of pale ales and IPA's but I just couldn't get back into it.

This beer has renewed my love for this style. Its strong, its still pretty damn hoppy and yet it still has a hint of malty sweetness to it. 4.5/5 very very solid beer.

    Thumbs up

Dogfish Head - Punkin Ale (Pumpkin Ale)

    Spoiler for Bottle & Pour:

The four packs of it just showed up in my local QFC (priced at $11.99). I decided to give myself a little fall treat and try it out.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful clear copper color, dare I say almost pumpkin? Very small, off-white head which stuck around for a good while. Small, sporadic carbonation bubbles from the pour which lasted a few minutes.

Smell: A very dominating spice note, however not at all overwhelming. Sweet and earthy with a small linger of nutmeg/allspice.

Taste: Mmmm, mmm, mmm. I don't want to say complex, but there is definitly a few things going on here. Not as sweet as it smelled yet still reminds me of a wonderful pumkpin pie. You can taste the brown ale aspect that the appearance lacked and the higher alcohol content adds some nice warmth. First note of mild, delicate brown sugar as well as nutmeg, followed by pumpkin and a hint of cinnamon and left with a nice malt/roast finish.

Mouthfeel: Wonderful mouthfeel. A nice, light carbonation that you would expect from a beer like this. Very full and warm with a nice, light cream.

Drinkability: I enjoyed this next to my fireplace and if I could take the wonderful feelings of cuddling next to it with some sweet molasses cookies and a nice pumpkin chai tea, jam that into a beer, then lighten and smoothen it up, Punkin Ale is what you'd get. Very well constructed and very delicious. Combine the 7% abv with the feeling that you just ate a slice of grandma's best homebaked pumpkin pie and its no surprise why it's sold in four packs.

Overall Score: Most surely a 5/5 for me. Fall is my favorite season and I wait all year for the wonderful beers that accompany it. Dogfish Head is a great brewery and this pumpkin ale will simply be another addition to my list of beers I wait 9-10 months out of the year for!!

Great review. My local grocer has it and I'm picking it up tomorrow when I get paid.

WITW if you liked Dogfish Head's pumpkin Ale do yourself a god damned favor and try Southern Tier's pumpkin ale called Pumking. First of all it's got some of the sickest bottle art you'll find EVER and it seriously is like eating a deliciously rich slice of pumpkin pie with each sip. Plus at 9% ABV it packs a wallop. I'll review it in depth tomorrow as I can barely keep my eyes open right now haha.

Second beer I'll be reviewing tomorrow is Blue Point Brewery's magnificently unique beer called Toxic Sludge. Don't let the name fool you, haha.

EDIT: JF posted a wonderfully articulate review of Southern Tier's Pumking Ale here. I'll expound on it a bit tomorrow and add some of my own opinions on it. My taste buds just collectively busted nuts thinking about it. It's a good thing that tastes just like Pumking Ale...

EDIT2: For those who are fans of the pumpkin ales, try Southampton Brewery's Pumpkin Ale. Hands down the best pumpkin ale on the market in my opinion. I actually have a recommendation for pumpkin ales for any sort of mood/occasion one might be in. Maybe I'll make that a separate post. This time of year is my favorite for many reasons, pumpkin ale being one of them, haha.

This year's punkin' Ale by Dogfish Head was by far the worst pumpkin ale out of the selection we have around here, maybe I got a not so great batch. But the Post Road Pumpkin Ale and the American Pumpkin Ale blow DFH Punkin' Ale out of the water this year. Two years ago was probably the best year I have had with DFH PA.

Awesome. Thanks for the recommendations RP. The grocery stores in my area, while better than the average 7-11, usually don't carry too many craft/specialty brews. However there is a store about 20 mins away called Bottleworks, about gas station size, that sells only beer. Shelves upon shelves and reach-ins filled with hard-to-find beers from all over the world. I'll be making a trip in the next couple of days and i'll be sure to see if they have both that you said. Where's that Toxic Sludge review man? Got me all curious..

Also, definitly diggin the bottle and 9% abv.
    Spoiler for Bottle Art:

If you're refering to Buffalo Bill's American Pumpkin Ale I am going to highly disagree with you. BB is the Budwieser of pumpkin ales (and nearly the same price). Watery (5%abv I believe), lacking of fullness and flavor, and just all around not that great. To me at least. I've never tried Post Road but will see if Bottleworks carries it and pick up a bottle. Seems like some okay reviews on BA but quite frankly, I want my fall/winter warmer or spice beer to have a higher abv than 5%. However, you are the beer meister so I will give ya the benefit of the doubt

Yes I am, regardless of the beers low abv it is far better than this year's DFH punkin' ale, this shit lacks even a pumkin taste, the BB is creamy and slightly sweet but like I was saying if you want a good pumkin ale go straight for some Post Road, that ' shit is bomb.

I'm about to drink some beer wine, don't remember the name, been in the fridge for almost a month, takes me forever to drink the new ones.
