Studies Find Nicotine May Have Medicinal Value
Studies are coming out saying that nicotine, one of the chemicals used in cigarettes, may have some good effects on one's health. Smokers who used nicotine patches were found to be less likely to develop Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
Scientists say it is because nicotine stimulates brain receptors responsible for memory, learning and concentration. Some say the stimulant could be used to help young people who have short term memory problems brought on by ADHD and depression.
For a while, nicotine has been regarded as nothing more than a toxic stimulant. Now the National Institute of Aging is donating $1 million to study the substance more. Doctors also warn that these possible benefits listed need more study.
