Seen those "advanced technology" mushroom incubators scattered about the internet? Surprise! They're not that advanced. Here you will learn to build one of your own with items you can find around the house and buy with but a few dollars. This will allow for the same airflow technology as a pricey market incubator.
Required Materials
-One large plastic Rubbermaid tub: Any size that will comfortably house your cultures.
-Airstones(2): Found in pet stores
-Drill
-Air pump: Also found in pet stores
-Perlite: Found in garden centers and home improvement stores
-Water
Procedure
1. Drill two holes 2/3's of the way up one of the smaller sides of the tub that correspond to the size of the tube running from your airstones to the air pump.
2. Thread the hoses through the holes and connect them to the airstones.
3. Drill a number of slightly smaller holes throughout the top seal of the tub.
4. Secure your airstones to the bottom of your tub, placing them lengthwise along the length of the tub. Set them equidistant from one another and the edges as to assure equal ventilation.
5. Pour your perlite into the tub, filling it 3.5 inches high.
6. Pour warm water into your tub, allowing a distance of 1 inch between the top line of the water and the top line of the perlite. Judge this by checking the sides of the tub.
7. Plug in and turn on your air pump, birth your cultures, and care them to fruition.
This incubator allows a constant flow of moist, clean air through the apparatus. By filtering through the top of the tub, it blocks the chance of falling contaminates with a constant flow of warm upwards air.
Keep in mind that I sterilization procedures were not discussed, and that is up to the cultivator. Remember: Sterile, Sterile, Sterile.
