Howto: Make Your Own Double Filtration Bong!

Welcome! Tonight we're going to be making our own double filtration bong. Have you ever wanted one of those fancy RooR's, or Xhales, but don't have the cash? Well here's how!

Step one- Find two Gatorade Bottles. These are the standard size that they sell in vending machines, and places like that. I just sort of acquire Gatorade bottles, so this is a good use for them. You're going to need two, and no flavor doesn't matter for the wise guys. :p

Step two- Cut the bottom off of one of the bottles, right at the seam, where the vertical indentations begin. This will be the bottle that goes on top.

Step Three- You're going to need to make the crucial part. This is the part that will allow you to filter the smoke twice. Take a Gatorade cap and drill three holes in a triangular pattern, and fit three full length straws in it. This will go in the lower bottle.

Step Four-

Next you are going to make the stem. Cut a hole in the bottom of the bottle about an inch or two from the bottom. Take a pen (or in my case a straw, I was out of pens) and insert it into the hole (giggity). Then, pour candle wax around it to form a watertight seal.

Step Five- Place the cut bottle on top of the bottle which we just put the stem in. Pour candle wax around the seal, and be sure to use a lot, you're going to have to keep a whole bunch of water from seeping out. Also be sure to put some water in the bottom level, as it's going to be pretty hard to reach after you seal them together

It may not be pretty, but it definitely works.

Step Six- Add a socket or bowl of your choice to the pen / straw. You need something to actually smoke out of, right?

How is the straw stem + metal bowl not bending? Wouldn't that suck if it just bent and spilled your half smoked bowl all over the place?

The wax held it on mine. Just had a fair amount down there, and it stayed in place. The socket looks heavier than it actually is, hence why the optical illusion

The wax seems like a lot of work. When I actually took time to make a decent home made bong I used a ton of Hot Glue from a gun.

Hot Glue is terrible for your body is you happen to accidentally inhale some fumes from heating up your bud. If you need a sealant that you can safely smoke with after using, use non-toxic solicone aquarium sealant.

The wax holds as long as you put a fair amount. I did a few "coats", where I would put it down, wait for it to harden, then put another layer on top. It's very sturdy, and the great thing is if you get a crack you can just remelt the seal with a lighter and you're good as new.

Found silicone sealant at petsmart, the only tube they had was huge, for $6. I was surprised how well the two bottles fit together after you cut the bottom off. This is going to be a cool little device.

Yeah, it's suprisingly perfect. They form a nice seal, you just need the wax to make it watertight. It hits soooooo well, you can barely feel the hits

Don't mean to sound like an amateur, but how exactly would one go about
filling this with water? would you simply fill it from the top and wait for it to filter its way down?
Is it to be considered a one time use piece, or can it be used multiple times?

You can always add water to the bottom chamber through whatever you use as a slide. Or, add water to the top til it's past the bent-down ends of the straws, then blow through the top to force water thru the straws into the bottom chamber

im attempting to make one of these nifty little double filtration bongs as we speak. everything thus far is coming out perfect except for the wax. i melted my wax using a double boiler and then poured it around the bottles in an attempt to seal them but am having incredible difficulties. the wax just breaks off and is not strong enough to seal. Any care to help with their input?

Go get some silicone sealant from walmart. Its stronger and much easier to manage than wax.

DK: I just had too much on top. It hits really well, you get a ton of smoke since you have both chambers

Just finished making one! sweet deal +rep


With mine I cut the bottom of the bottle right at the bottom, so that it sort of curved in; it fit perfectly around the top of the other bottle and is very tight and airtight around it. I did use Vitamin Water bottles, but they are essentially identical to Gatorade bottles (except the top isn't "wrinkly," it's just smooth). Also, I used four straws ;)
