Although we don't get too much of this kind of thing on here I thought it might be useful to have a list of non safe bong building materials for the people that turn up using aliminium foil for bowls, or thin plastic near heat and that sort of shit. I've seen it on a few other forums and have stolen some of the knowledge from there.

Safe stuff includes:

Glass
Stainless steel (only)
Brass
Non-varnished wood

Non safe stuff includes:

Bronze
Copper
Steel (non-stainless)

Things not to use unless away from hot parts:

Plastic (especially thin stuff like in bottles)
Any sort of tape (eg: duct tape etc)
Glue/Solvents

If anyone with better knowledge wants to add to the list (in any category) go ahead. I'll add them to this post too.

Comments/criticism welcome.

When I was in high school, before I was 18, I made pieces. I took the scooter handles, like from a razor, took the little clip thing out and taped a socket on it. Threw a screen in there and I had a pipe. I had another one that was a female for the bong. They lasted for ever.

Sorry I guess I didn't really mean treated so much as varnished, cos that would be bad.

Yeah I've just made a bong with a socket as well, with a bottle. It's pretty nice for a makeshift thing.

Well aluminium's supposed to release some bad fumes or something I think, so you might wanna check that your can's stainless steel before hand.

mine is made from a plastic gatorade bottle, i think that its safer than my dasani bottle one because i noticed that the plastic was burning the last time i hit it, it was getting black. plastic in gatorade bottles is a lot stronger.

lol I used to go to job corps and we would use wire nuts to make little easy to hide one hitters. didnt like the plastic with weed but when on us government property you gotta do what you gotta do.

Would a doorstopper be ok for a bowl? those springy things below your wall.

I know you said that plastic is not safe but I made a bong out of a NOS energy drink bottle. Is that ok? Or is that bad as well?

Bronze is fine, as most metals should be. As long as you don't heat towards the melting point or even vaporizing point, no fumes should be given off. Aluminum being bad is a myth unless you use a torch lighter and hold the heat on it for awhile. Bronze, however, is sometimes used to make pipes and I almost bought one today. I did get a bronze bowl though.

I bought a treated wood bowl from mr.music before and after about 3 days of constant burning a bunch of gushy varnish smelling stuff started to form on it. Needless to say I snapped it in half and the it the fuck out. I don't think it's that safe ahaha.

I believe you mean...The element aluminide found in aluminum foil is believed to have the ability to give you Alzheimer's. You don't even need a torch lighter to heat up a piece of aluminum enough for it to vaporize and release aluminide.

Please use correct grammar/punctuation and also I believe it is barium aluminide that has been implicated in the cause of Alzheimer's. I am also pretty sure this isn't found in aluminum foil otherwise you wouldn't wrap your food in it and cook it in the oven.

Oh? I'll have to use that instead of wax on mine. The wax has been sorta leaky.

I wouldn't suggest copper as being safe to smoke out of. I believe it is poisonous. Also, Gorilla Glue works as a great glue because its non-toxic and heat resistant.

Dude, if a hose was poisonous then pretty much every Aussie stoner would be dead by now haha.

haha, true man, very true. Just about every kid I know has a hose in their gatorade bongs.
I heard using aliminium foil for a cone is really bad for you. Dunno if it's true but apparently it can give brain damage or alzeimers, stuff like that.

No. It won't give you brain damage or Alzheimer's. You don't heat it up nearly enough for bad shit to be released from it.

I used electrical tape, a spring door-stopper (not sure if it's brass or a hybrid of two metals), aluminum foil, and pill bottles lol. That type of tape is a good sealer, and it was air-tight. But those damn extra chemicals keep me from enjoying the chemicals I used in the first place.
