Gambling, prostitution, and now pot? Organizers of a Nevada ballot measure hope voters in a state where almost everything goes will go one better and legalize marijuana. If it passes Nov. 7, Nevada will be the first state to allow adults to possess up to an ounce of pot that they could buy at government-regulated marijuana shops.

If this passes I think I may have to move to and/or go to college in Nevada. Doesn't Colorado have a similar bill on their ballot? If I was from Nevada (or Colorado) I would pester anyone of voting age to vote for it. That's freakin' sweet, but will the federal laws overrule the states law?

Wouldn't this just get struck down by the federal government? Like, when Denver basically decriminalized up to an ounce for 21+ year olds, it was reported that on a federal level you could still get in trouble.

According to Attorney General John Suthers:
"They could write somebody up, but they would then have to go to the United States attorney and ask them to prosecute the case... And I'm telling you right now, the United States attorney has a threshold, I used to be the United States attorney, and I think their threshold used to be about 100 plants. They're not going to take possession of an ounce cases."
According to DEA spokesman Jeffrey Sweetin:
"There aren't enough federal resources on the entire planet to handle ounce size marijuana possession... Your viewers should understand if this passes, we're really legitimately legalizing an ounce of marijuana. They're not going to be prosecuted."

Nevada had a vote for legalization that didn't fly in 2002. I'm not so sure that having "pot shops" would make people MORE likely to vote for this legislation. The last vote was 46%/54% against, if memory serves.
I don't think it'll be happening.

Yeah, I currently reside in Vegas...although I think it has a chance, it will not happen. There are too many mormon people here, ironically. Also, whoever said they wanted to come to college here...hell no, our schools suck ass in this state.

I do belive Colorado already passed a law legalizing possesion of up to 1 ounce of pot, but the difference between Colorado and Nevada is that Nevada will actually provide a legal means of getting it. In Colorado there still has to be someone commiting criminal actions for you to get the 1 oz of pot, but Nevada's law will allow the government to control the distribution of pot, extremely smart on Nevada's part. The biggest advance this makes is that it keeps the drug economy in the US rather then allowing drug money to be exported back to Mexico, Canada, or any other countries supplying the US with pot. This Nevada bill is landmark.

The previous legislation alowed 2-3 ounces, did not have the pot shops, did not have the increased punishments for DUI or giving to children, etc.

Colorado has the vote on the ballot this year, Denver is the only area where the 1oz decriminization (sp) is in that state, I believe.

My only fear is that the same thing that happened to Tobacco will happen to the companies the government would have growing; pesticides, chemicals, tar, addictive chemicals, blah.

If American Government class has told me anything; any power not specifically granted in the Constitution or it's amendments is reserved for the states; though the Federal Government has laws against controled substances - there is no direct wording saying that they have the right to control that substance; but they'll probably argue that it's in the Elastic clause under providing for a common good, or something.

Except it won't happen. Why would anyone buy from a store if it had shitty pesticides in the bud? I don't understand why people think this will happen. Weed is already being sold. And do these nugs have shitty pesticides and chemicals in them? No, it'll just be like a bunch of cannabis clubs opened to the public.
more and more little baby steps towards a legalized marijuana culture of the future. I hate this country, it just needs to get over and done with so we can all be free to smoke. But anyway, as much as id like to see that pass, i have a feeling it probably wont, not yet anyway.

Colorado hasn't passed this yet either. the amendment is on the bill for the 7th. Its pretty much the same bill that Nevada is voting on. I believe Alaska is the state that has already legalized possesion.

FUCK FUCK FUCK.
I was really really getting hyped up over the course of this thread. And now you have to ruin it for me. Stupid republicans!!!!
Thinking about it some more, they just need to lower the amount.
1oz is like 200-300 bucks depending on what season, state, and strength it is. So like, 1/4 or even 1/8 is like 50 bucks. And personally, I think 1/4th is plenty, you know? cheaper, you won't find people nearly as high, and it seems so little. Someone tells someone who has never smoked pot they have 1/8th on them, they are probably gonna be "that's all?!" While if you tell someone you have 1/4th on them and they are like "Heyy! Big spender are we?"
So you get those yes's, then you get like that large group of people who are like "wow, thats it? There won't be any issues anymore!" Should be around 55-65% right there.
right, because all the democrats want to legalize it...

I was trying to be funny. Didn't work out too well. I was playing on the joke that all democrats are liberal hippies, and repulicans are rich white guys sitting in their million dollar homes by the fire, smoking a pip with a fez on.
Didn't work out I guess. Probably because the last part I was actually serious in.

IMO, I don't think amount played a large role in the vote. I'd assume that most people just had a general idea of what the bill was, not the specifics (like an ounce, only 21+, actual truthful information about marijuana, etc.) and if they did know the specifics the majority probably didn't fully understand how much that was. I think it was more "OH NOES LEGAL MARI-JU-ANA! ALL OUR KIDS WILL BE SMOKING IT AND BECOMING DOPE FIENDS!"
I'm not sure how educated of a choice it was by most of the voters. However, even if it wasn't educated I think it just shows that it shows the opinion of the people in this country; which says, we're just not ready for marijuana to be legalized yet, which is sad. Personally, I'm quite a pessimist on the whole legalization thing... I wish it would happen, but no matter how hard I wish, or how much I want it to happen, it ain't going to, until I or someone (or many people) of a similar viewpoint are in a position(s) of power, and willing to do it. There is hope though, because this vote could have been swayed by just 6% of the population (if 6% voted yes instead of no, it'd be 51-49). But, until we get abunch of DnBers in power (Ollie '08), it'll be illegal... like that stops any of us :cf:

Well, about 2 years ago I smoked my first bowl (really my first weed). And before that, if someone said they had an 1/8th, I would have replied "That Sucks". However if they say that to me now, I am real excited because I know that is quite a bit for a small little hick town up in the northeast.
So personally, I would vote yes if the bill had a very small amount like 1/8th of an ounce (being that I was a parent). That or I would just stay away from the polls.

I voted yes. oh well. I didn't really expect it to pass anyway.
